The Water Treatment Group (WTG) provides a forum for member companies supplying speciality chemicals, equipment and support services for all aspects of water treatment to discuss relevant regulatory issues, industry standards and codes of practice. The WTG also seeks to provide the industry with a focal point for dialogue with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and for input to the work of other organisations such the British Standards Instutution (BSI), the building services research body BSRIA and the International Standards Organisation (ISO).
Examples of the work of the group include the provision of significant input in the development of the HSE's Approved Code of Practice and Guidance document for the control of legionella bacteria in water systems (L8), in the development of BSI's BS7592:2008 (Sampling for Legionella bacteria in water systems) and BS8580 (Risk Assessments for Legionella control), in the updating by BSRIA of guidance documents on water treatment for building services systems (AG 2/93) and on pre-commissioning cleaning of pipework (AG 1/2001) and in the development by ISO of standards for the evaluation of cooling water inhibitors.
The group also supports the work of the Legionella Control Association (LCA), which was formed by BACS and the Water Management Society (WMSoc) in close consultation with the HSE, and provides four members of the LCA Management Committee.
Catering for the diversity of member companies' interests, BACS is a member of the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG), a body which provides advice and guidelines on the treatment and management of swimming and spa pools. WTG members are, therefore, able to input to work of PWTAG.
WTG meetings are held quarterly and include updates on regulatory developments and standards, reports on the work of the LCA and PWTAG and presentations by guest speakers on selected topics of interest.
